Only What's Done For Christ Will Last

Growing up the son of a former college football player who had a shot at the NFL, I always loved sports. As a boy I kept up with almost every sport but as I’ve gotten older and the responsibilities of life have taken up much of my time, I mainly keep up with only football and basketball. I became a Lakers fan as a little boy growing up in the 80’s. My favorite play of this era was Kobe Bryant. Kobe was an assassin with a killer instinct and a flair for the dramatic that reminded me so much of Michael Jordan. I loved to watch him play. He was clutch. He was graceful. He was an artist on the court. He had moments in the sport of basketball where he seemed to be unstoppable; invincible.

But this past Sunday (January 26, 2020) proved once again that death does not discriminate when it comes to age, health, wealth, power, prestige, economic or social status. Kobe along with his daughter and 7 others were involved in a helicopter accident that took all their lives. We must remember to be in prayer for all the families that were affected by this tragedy, but it brings to my mind two things.

First, everyone will die. Life is short. No one is invincible. Death is inevitable no matter who you are or what you’ve accomplished in life. The Bible says in Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” That leads me to my second thought which is a quote by a missionary of the past named C.T. Studd. “Only one life twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” The only thing that will matter after you die is whether you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. The only thing that will last after you die is what you did for Jesus Christ on this earth. Make sure that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and then live for Him because you can’t get to heaven without Him and you can’t take anything with you from this world when you die. Mark 8:36 says, For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
